Preserved With a Twist

A handsome old San Francisco house with an eclectic and fanciful façade inspired its owners to take a freewheeling approach inside. Outside, such bungalow-era features as oversize brackets and corbels, a chalet roof, and transomed Glasgow windows are joined by such Moresque elements as the vaulted entry arch, a baroque window, and tile-work. Inside, the owners transcended period design-by-rote with their subtle, transitional treatment. Collections of Depression-era Hall china and contemporary art glass are color accents against white walls and dark furniture in rooms inspired by Scots architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
